A word from our founder
I fell for Singapore as a teenager, reading Lee Kuan Yew's From Third World to First, borrowed at random from the public library in Angers, my hometown. Before I finally came here, I spent years working on how France cares for its elderly, in research and at the ministry in charge of older people. That is where I learned how much a family depends on the person who looks after its loved ones.
In 2014 I arrived to finish my MBA at the National University of Singapore and rented a room in Bukit Timah, near Beauty World, a shopping mall full of maid agencies. What I found there stayed with me. Many helpers were giving up as much as six months of salary to pay an agency for a job. Families paid high fees and still felt poorly served. Only the agency came out ahead.
So I sold my apartment in Paris, put everything into a new company, and opened We Are Caring on 1 January 2016, from a desk in a co-working space. On Sundays I interviewed helpers in crowded malls to film their first video profiles. Local and expatriate families trusted us from the very first year, and I am still grateful to them.
Ten years later, our helpers still pay nothing, and families still see every fee. In the past twelve months, 1,081 work permits were approved for our families, and 73.29% of the helpers we placed stayed with the same employer for at least six months, against an industry average of 62.81%. Behind those numbers are a team of sixteen, in Singapore and abroad, and thousands of families and helpers who trusted us with something that matters deeply to them.
